Family Portraits and the Lovely Coves of Laguna Beach

Aside from one glorious trip to play golf at the Pelican Hills course (uhh-mazing), I’ve never spent much time in Laguna Beach. Not until I spent a gloriously warm, clear afternoon with the Durand family. If the charming houses, great hilltop views, and Riviera-like coves weren’t enough to win me over, the family themselves were warm and fun enough to give me a reason to plan future visits.

We started out at their lovely home, and then made our way down to picturesque Fishermans Cove just in time for sunset.

Lucas is so pro with that light saber; he’ll spin, pose, and go fierce in his expressions. Apparently, he idolizes a Star Wars character named Savage Opress. Yeah — I had to Google it too. Bottom line is the character and the kid are both hard core.

UCLA Botanical Gardens Engagement

Matt and Sofia are getting married next August, but it’s never too early to get engagement photos done — especially when you can use them for your Christmas cards.

Sofia was a UCLA Bruin, and when we were first talking about possible shooting locations, she mentioned her alma mater. I had only been to the school a few times, but knew its iconic brickwork buildings would provide a stellar backdrop. Add in the sentimental value to Sofia and the fact that Matt’s school was about 300 miles too far away for an afternoon drive, and we had our location.

We started off in the Mathias Botanical Gardens on the eastern edge of the campus. Since the sun was still fairly high overhead, the leafy canopy softened the light, making for luscious skin tones.

We brought along their dog Davis, who is so adorable, and a slightly more hyper stand-in for their cat Miles who had to stay at home and miss the party. Davis was going crazy in the gardens for all the squirrels — which is part of why in my mind, she’s the spitting image of Dug from the movie UP in both looks and instantaneous love for everyone she meets.

Wild Pregnancy

Being pregnant — especially for the first time — isn’t the passive, gentle experience ’50s TV made it out to be. It is a wild ride full of surprises and coming to terms with the fact that you don’t have full control over how this child will change your life. But, it’s also a time of unparalleled beauty and excitement. These emotions remind me of rugged hill country: untamed, unexplored, riveting, and inspiring passion. What better place for a pregnancy photo shoot?

I photographed Lizzie and Donavan’s wedding a while back, and remember well the way they look at each other. Lizzie’s already very natural in front of a camera, but you get her looking at her man, and she beams like a lighthouse. Same thing with Donavan; whenever I was shooting just him, I’d have Lizzie stand over my shoulder so I could capture that look of a man surveying the greatest treasure in the world. I can only imagine the look on their faces when they finally get to see their baby.

Kiss Albums

When my clients order a photo book as part of their wedding package, I pour all my creativity into choosing just the right photos to tell the story of their engagement and wedding day in inventive layouts and color treatments. The end product is something that will always invite curiosity from guests to your home as they flip through it, and cared for properly the book will be an heirloom you can pass down to your children and grandchildren.

While I do the design myself, I use a company called Kiss Wedding Books for the printing. The thing I love about working with Kiss (well, one of the many things really) is the amazing quality of their product. From the archival materials, to the print resolution, to the care they take in packaging and shipping, I know these guys care as much about your product as I do.

Each album comes with a protective (and stylish) cloth sleeve to help protect it so it looks as good on the day when you show it to your grandchildren as on the day you first received it.

You can see how thick the pages are. This gives them a substantial feel.

The hard binding comes in either linen or supple leather, and a variety of colors. Personally, I'm all about the red -- it's dead sexy.

The pages open completely flat, so you get a full panoramic feel when the book is open.

Catamaran San Diego Wedding ~ Andreia and Joe

You may remember Andreia and Joe from their engagement session
last January. These two love the beach; they and about half their
wedding guests play beach volleyball together every weekend. That’s a
special kind of dedication that I just do not share — I run past the
sand to get straight to the waves. But these two seem to live for it.
Not only did we take some gorgeous engagement shots on the shoreline of
Coronado at the beginning of the year, but they chose to marry just
steps from the waters of Mission Bay, San Diego at the beautiful Catamaran Resort.

They are so cute together: Joe, always the vision of steadfast New
Yorker strength, and breezy Andreia with her enchanting Brazilian
accent. They look fantastic together, and the light on their wedding day
was so luscious that they somehow looked even more amazing.

Andreia's dress had a weightless cloud-like quality that so perfectly matched her personality.

Anticipation

I love this shot from a recent wedding in Santa Monica. I
snapped it just before the bride entered the church and saw her man
waiting for her. You have to love the smile of anticipation.

HDR Church Photography

Although the photojournalistic nature of modern wedding
photography is mostly about up close emotion and personal stories, I
love stepping back now and again to see the big picture. I take myself
out of what everyone else is seeing to see what no one else gets to.

At the wedding I shot last weekend, I scurried up to the balcony to
take a few wide shots of the gorgeous Saint Monica’s Catholic church in
Santa Monica, California. There are so many different hues of light at
different intensities in there that work together to caress the
architecture, but cameras can’t capture such distant variations from
highlights to shadows all in one shot.

Enter HDR — high dynamic range. That’s just a fancy process where you
blend a few different photos at different exposures to take the best
light from each.

The result showcases the detail and the light in almost surrealistic ways.

For reference, here’s one of the shots I used to create the HDR
composite. You can see that although the altar, candles, and purple
arches are nicely lit, the rest of the scene is too dark to tell what’s
going on.

Double Rainbow

It’s been raining here in LA.

A lot.

But I love it. Let everyone else complain. Having grown up in
Southern California I see water falling from the sky as either a
Hollywood special effect or some kind of crazy miracle where God says
“Hey, you know that stuff that comes through your faucet if you pay your
bills? I can produce it out of thin air, no charge.”

Rain is pure, cleansing. It makes the flowers grow.

And if you’re very patient, it can play with the sunlight to give you this:

two full rainbow arches, aka a double rainbow

After
five days of rain, the sun broke through the clouds late Wednesday to
create a brilliantly lit full rainbow arch. As it grew brighter and
brighter, a second one formed above it. That’s right … double rainbow.

Twitter blew up with thousands of tweets from across LA calling out
the spectacular spectrumed duo. But I think the wittiest notation came
from LeVar Burton, who quipped “The very elusive Double Reading Rainbow…
http://twitpic.com/3ij4r4

Even with my 24mm lens, the double rainbow was too big to capture in
one shot, so I took a panning series of four and spliced them into this
panorama in Photoshop.

I counted my lucky stars that I had my 5D with me, as earlier this
year another radiant rainbow showed up in the exact same spot, and all I
had was my point-n-shoot. Still, I think I put together a pretty fun
composite of the shots. Here’s the one from February (see more shots in my post from February 10, 2010).

So, double rainbow. To borrow from the YouTube guy, “What does it mean?”

I prefer to think that here in the advent of Christmas, God is reminding us that he fulfills promises.

Pasadena Wedding: Anna + Zeke

You might remember Anna and Zeke from their engagement session in the Venice Canals back in October.

The first time I met Anna, I remember her gushing about Zeke and how
after four years together, she still gets butterflies when she sees him.
These two are so fun together; they drop all inhibitions around each
other. The word serious is not in their vocabulary … which is funny,
because they love Scrabble, and I’m sure that word’s gotta be worth some
good points with the u.

Their wedding ceremony and reception were held in Pasadena, California at the newly opened Noor Restaurant.
I got to go to their grand opening last month, where I got to taste
first hand the superb Mediterranean fare their kitchen will soon become
famous for, not to mention an outstanding assortment of desserts from
pastry chef Vanessa Collins. See photos of her and her amazing pastries
from the grand opening party.

The whole day was gorgeous, and so much fun. It was my last wedding
of the year, and I’m so happy to have ended off with such wonderful
people. The wonderful Jessica Auten was my second shooter, and rounded out the photographic story of this wedding beautifully.

to mention the bride — I love that coy look she’s shooting the camera).
And it’s only blocks from City Hall and Paseo Colorado.

courtyard ceremony - Paseo Colorado wedding in the fountain courtyard

The
fountain courtyard right outside Noor is lovely. With some strategic
lighting additions and drapery, it was an idyllic setting for a wedding
ceremony. Thankfully, they turned off the fountain to keep everyone dry,
which had the added benefit of giving a clearer view of the amazing
tile work inside of it.

I love the billowy curtains their decorator hung around the courtyard. They looked so pretty lit up at night.

tuna tartare, fig toasts, steak

Since
I bonded with Anna and Zeke over food, and because they picked Noor as
their wedding location because of it, I simply had to document the tasty
morsels from the evening. Clockwise from top left, we have appetizers
of tuna tartare on potato crisps and something I’ll call mushroom
tortes. Dinner was tender steak and wonderfully flaky salmon followed by
a goat cheese and fig toast with micro greens.

scrabble cake

They
had a three-tier chocolate wedding cake for the traditionalists, and as
a special celebration of one of the activities that bonded them when
they first dated, a Scrabble cake. Can you believe all the love-related
words they got on that thing? It’s like they hired New York Times puzzle
master Will Shortz to bake it for them. And it’s completely edible,
right down to the tiles. I’ll be honest, even as someone who used to
make his living writing, Scrabble is a complete mystery to me. I play at
the level of a fourth grader. And believe me: monosyllabic words win
you no games.

throwing rice (not really rice)

Instead
of rice, Anna somehow got a batch of the fake snow they use to dress
movie sets for Christmas movies for her guests to throw at the grand
exit.

Blessings in your marriage, my friends. Anna and Zeke: the love that
reaches from A to Z. Oh, hey … that makes the Scrabble cake make even
more sense!
